Alpine restoration: planting and seeding of native species facilitate vegetation recovery

چکیده
Vegetation recovery in severely disturbed alpine ecosystems can be accelerated through active restoration measures. This study evaluated the short-term effects of two treatments, planting propagated native Salix (willow) shrubs three different densities (1, 2.5, and 4 plants/m2) seeding grass Festuca ovina (sheep fescue), a heathland. We natural vegetation (i.e. cover, vascular plant species richness, recruitment) permanent plots, 5 years after implementation The results showed that both treatments had positive but on recovery; plantings (with ≥2.5 increased richness recruitment seedlings, whereas F. bottom field layer cover. Our also show importance soil conditions for recovery, as moister plots with higher percentage fine substrate cover richness. shows work complementary highlights considering indicators when evaluating effectiveness

Whether the non-native seaweed Sargassum muticum can displace or impact native eelgrass Zostera marina has been debated in the literature, based on differing substrate requirements of the 2 species. Field observations in Bamfield, British Columbia, Canada, revealed that the non-native S. muticum successfully inhabits an eelgrass bed through colonizing siphons of the native clam Tresus capax. Nu...

Although a cover of grasses and legumes may be established on exposed mountain subsoils through seeding and the use of a complete fertiliser, this cover is not likely to last for more than a few years without the application of more fertiliser. Native tussock species once established in the protection of other low-growing species might persist and provide stability over a longer period. This pa...
متن کاملEcological Context and Vegetation Restoration
Baseline information on flora is critical for planning salt marsh restoration in New Haven, Connecticut’s West River Memorial Park. This information will be important for evaluating existing site conditions and success or failure of the restoration. This chapter presents results of a plant inventory and addresses the ecological considerations necessary to return salt marsh plants to the site. A...
